Carson City Public Works gives free landfill disposal vouchers

Carson City Public Works is kicking off spring clean-up week with free landfill disposal vouchers.

Residents of Carson City can receive a voucher April 13 through 17, good for one free disposal at the Carson City landfill.

David Bruketta, utility manager for Carson City Public Works hopes the initiative will help clean up the city.

“We want to encourage everyone to go ahead and help clean the city and to come and dump at the landfill,” Bruketta said. “We want to discourage illegal dumping so we are giving a one time pass to the dump for free.”

The free disposal voucher will be sent to residents in their April utility bill, and residents who rent in Carson City but don’t receive a utility bill from the city can pick up a voucher at the Carson City Public Works office, located at 3505 Butti Way, but they must bring ID and proof of residency. The voucher is valid until June 30.

“We give a long time to get to the landfill so that if people aren’t available next week to go to the dump, they can still go later,” Bruketta said.

Residents can use the voucher for one pickup bed and one small trailer, 4- by 8-feet long, of trash. The landfill will take any general household trash, a limit of five gallons of oil and antifreeze, and three automotive batteries and four tires. Bruketta said the landfill will not accept any household hazardous waste, to dispose of. Residents must make an appointment with Public Works for free disposal by calling 775-887-2355 ext. 7390 or 7380.

Alongside the free dump program, Public Works also is running a campaign to encourage people to cover their loads to prevent litter.

“We have received a lot of complaints about a lot of trash up ‘Dump Road’ and we just want to tell people to keep trash in their vehicles,” Bruketta said. “We prefer to not take enforcement action so we wanted to remind everyone to make sure their load is secure.”
