A new specialty tea shop in downtown Carson City serves “the best of the best,” according to the couple who opened it about a year after moving here from California.

Earl and Katherine Dela Cruz serve breakfast pastries, as well as luncheon pot pies and spring rolls all made by Katherine, as well as other food to complement the teas at Specialty Teas Tea Shop, 111 E. Telegraph St. Katherine Dela Cruz gave a rundown on the offerings.

“We handle artisan teas,” she said. “It took us a year to select the best. So we handle the best of the best.”

The shop is open Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but closes on Sundays and Mondays.

“We mostly focus on the teas, but we have a lot of baked goods,” said Katherine, who added she and her husband at this point man the store themselves with no employees. Asked how business has been in the initial six weeks or so, she replied it’s “slowly perking up.”

The shop contains seating for 22 but has a standup counter for a few more patrons to order. Other food fare includes breakfast panninis on English muffins with eggs, cheese and choice of bacon, sausage or ham, plus luncheon sandwiches and salads along with the chicken pot pies and spring rolls.

The new tea shop and eatery, just south of the Laxalt Building on East Telegraph Street, opened in February. The couple moved to Carson City about a year ago from the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area.
