Fallon softball earns series wins at Lowry

In the biggest weekend series of the season to date, the Fallon softball team came out a winner.

The Lady Wave took two of three games from Lowry including an 11-5 win in the finale on Saturday in Winnemucca. Fallon lost the first game, 9-3 and rebounded on Saturday for a 9-6 victory.

With the series win, Fallon sits at 12-2 in the Northern Division I-A and 13-6 overall. Rival Fernley swept South Tahoe outscoring the Vikings 37-1 in their three games as the Vaqueros (12-1, 14-4) moved into first place.

Lowry (12-3, 15-4), meanwhile sits in third followed by Elko (10-7, 14-10) and Sparks (8-7, 8-7).

Fallon returns to the diamond this weekend for a three-game set at home against Dayton (0-13, 0-13). The Lady Wave and Fernley cap their series on Tuesday at the Edward Arciniega Complex. The rivals split the first two games.

In Winnemucca, Fallon closed the series with an early offensive explosion. The Lady Wave’s 11 runs came in the first four innings as Fallon pounded out 18 hits in the finale.

Megan McCormick belted a pair of doubles as did teammate Kalyn Huckaby, who also added two RBIs.

Freshman Caitlyn Welch went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Izzy Thomas went 4-for-4 with a triple and one RBI.

In the circle, Kayla Buckmaster three a complete game as she struck out five and allowed four earned runs on just six hits.

In Saturday’s opener of a doubleheader, Lowry once again jumped out to an early lead. The Buckaroos led 3-1 after four innings, but then Fallon’s ferocious bats woke up.

The Lady Wave ripped off eight runs in the fifth inning to pick up a 9-6 win.

McCormick blasted a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, while Hannah Frank and Izzy Thomas added two RBIs each.

Ali Tedford had three hits including a double, scored three runs and stole two bases to lead Fallon.

In the circle, Buckmaster went the distance and picked up the win as she struck out five and allowed six runs, but only three earned. Fallon’s defense committed four errors.

Friday’s game saw the Buckaroos jump out to a 3-0 lead before Fallon scored twice in the fourth inning. Lowry, though, answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and held on for a 9-3 win.

Buckmaster was tabbed with the loss as she allowed six runs, all earned, while Ford came in on relief and allowed three runs — two earned.

Offensively, McCormick, Welch and Ford each drove in one run.

Baseball holds firm of first place

The Fallon baseball team’s sweep was capped with a thunderbolt as the Greenwave pounded Lowry on Saturday with a 27-6 victory.

The Greenwave opened the series with wins of 8-4 and 9-1 to remain atop the Northern Division I-A standings.

Fallon is 11-3 in league play and 11-8 overall followed by Elko (13-4, 16-6), South Tahoe (9-5, 12-6) and Spring Creek (9-5, 12-6).

The Greenwave, meanwhile, host Dayton (3-10, 3-10) for a three-game series this weekend at the Edward Arciniega Complex.

Fallon returns to the diamond on Tuesday for its final matchup against Fernley (7-7, 10-8).
