Students from Carson High School are raising money to attend the National History Day national competition in Boston.
In March, groups of sophomores competed in the Nevada National History Day, where they presented history projects to compete against other high school students around Nevada. Twelve students from Carson High won first place in their categories ranging from individual exhibits to group websites, which qualified them to go onto the national competition at the University of Boston.
“They create museum quality projects that will be judged by university professors, historians, and there will even be some people from the Smithsonian,” said Nicole Fagundes, the Nevada National History Day Teacher of the Year at Carson High. “They will be in a giant exhibit hall and judges will ask 5-15 minutes of questions. It is like defending a thesis.”
For the students, the trip will cost around $1,000 each, so the students will be holding fundraisers to help pay for the trip.
“These kids have been working so hard, and I am so proud of them,” Fagundes said. “Any contributions will help.”
Saturday, April 25, there will be a rummage sale at the high school starting at 7 a.m. Items are being collected, call 775-883-1066 and items will be picked up. Donations are needed by April 23.
Tuesday, April 28 from 4-10 p.m. BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse at the The Summit Reno, 13999 S. Virginia St., will give 15 percent if you have the event flier.
The students are also working with a company called Bead for Life who makes jewelry out of recycled paper to raise money to promote education in Uganda. The company will give 20 percent of proceeds to the fundraiser, so donations will benefit both the Carson City students and students in Uganda.
“This event is a big deal for the kids because it’s 21st century learning skills,” Fangundes said. “This is college learning and it is helping them better their skills to further their entertainment.”
