A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service starting at 11 p.m. tonight for Sierra Nevada that could pose problems for motorists crossing the passes through Saturday afternoon.
Snow could begin to accumulate above 6,000 feet , reaching 3-6 inches in the lower elevations and increasing to 6-12 inches above 7,000 feet, according to the advisory.
Forecasters warn that snow could create slick and icy roads with the worst conditions lasting through late Saturday morning.
They advise anyone with travel plans through the Sierra to leave early.
Today’s forecast is for cloudy skies and a chance of rain until lunchtime when the winds will pick up as the new storm arrives.
Expect west winds 15-20 mph, gusting to 35 mph.
