Nevada has received a $2.1 million grant as the first phase of the competition to create the Department of Energy’s geothermal research laboratory.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal or FORGE, could be built in Fallon and receive up to $30 million in funding form the federal government to research the next generation of geothermal energy technology.

“The nation’s lab for advancing geothermal belongs in Nevada. It would further establish Nevada as a leader in renewable energy,” said Reid.

Gov. Brian Sandoval said Nevada has a proud history of innovative geothermal development and that FORGE is a perfect match.

“Being selected as a host state for GORGE confirms Nevada’s status as a leader in geothermal energy,” he said.
