Bracey was born to Bracey and Evelyn Neal in Oregon where he grew up working in lumber mills, cowboying, and competing in motor cross races. As an adult he pursued his passion and became a timber-faller working in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska for 20 years then began driving trucks.

William T. Byrnes, Jr.

Bill Byrnes, age 73, died in his home in Dayton, Nevada on Sunday, August 23, 2015 after medical complications. Bill was born in San Francisco in 1941 and educated at Riordan High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at University of Nevada, Reno and his Master’s Degree at Northern Arizona University. He played for the Wolf Pack Football team as starting left defensive end.

Emily Louise Hanzal Keating was born on September 18, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska to her parents Frank A. Hanzal and Ann Kapalin Hanzal. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 27, 2015. In 1946, she earned her teaching degree at the Nebraska State Teacher’s College located in Kearney, Nebraska. Emily’s first teaching position was in Igloo, South Dakota at the Black Hills Ordinance Depot where she met her husband of 32 years, Dennis J. Keating.

WEDNESDAY At 6:08 p.m., a 30-year-old transient man was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, suspended driver’s license and a warrant after deputies attempted to locate the man and found him hiding in a ditch near Carmine Street and Neptune Court. Carson City teen remembered for his heart of gold

The 15-year-old Carson City boy who apparently drowned Saturday at Lake Tahoe was described as having a heart of gold by his family. Cameron St. Hilaire died Saturday at Sand Harbor State Park in Lake Tahoe while at the beach with his family. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office received a call about 11:51 a.m. for a subject in need of medical, upon arrival, several people had pulled Cameron out of the water and performed CPR. He was transported via helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center but could not be revived, said Washoe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Harman. His brother said that Cameron dropped his glasses in the water while they were swimming and believes that Cameron went back into the water to retrieve them.

A Lyon County deputy raised more than $11,000 for the family of the fallen Carson City deputy, Carl Howell. Nick Greenhut, who works in the Lyon County Detention Facility raised $11,250 in six days through GoFundMe after Deputy Howell was shot and killed last Saturday.

Member of burglary ring arrested for possession of stolen property

A seventh member has been arrested in connection with the “Pillow Case Bandits” — a burglary ring that hit Carson City, Douglas and Washoe counties in the last year. On Wednesday, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested Bob Stover after serving a search warrant on his residence and reportedly finding hundreds of pieces of stolen property related to the burglaries.

MONDAY At 9:11 p.m., Lloyd Stevens, 36, of Carson City was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and violation of a temporary protection order after deputies responded to reports of a residential burglary near the 2300 block of Sherman Lane. Bail was set at $21,000.

My great-grandfather was a Basque sheepherder. He came from the Pyrenees Mountains in the Basque Country and made his home in our Sierra Nevada. The ancient practice of sheepherding thrives in our state even today, providing jobs and opportunities for many immigrant families, as it did mine. But a new rule from the United States Department of Labor now threatens their trade. Reflecting a strained understanding of this proud, ancestral calling, the rule will harm the nomadic culture of migrant sheepherding by imposing an unworkable mini-code on its daily operations.

Getting home to the puppies

Just two seconds after I sat down on my living room couch, Molly jumped onto my lap, licking my face. That puppy had followed me into the house, getting in my way as I tried to enter the back door. I’d never had Molly be that glad to see me before.

Elvin Fred sentenced to life in prison for trafficking

Elvin Fred was sentenced to life in prison with a possibility of parole Monday in District Court for drug trafficking level three. Fred, along with six other individuals, were arrested when Tri-Net Narcotics Task Force raided a house in the 3500 block of Desatoya Drive in early March. Authorities seized nearly 11 ounces of methamphetamine with a street value of more than $30,000. He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking level three on June 29 in District Court.

Details of Carson City deputy’s shooting death still being investigated

Investigators still are trying to determine the details around the shooting death of a Carson City deputy, said the Reno Police Public Information Officer. The Reno Police Department took over the investigation into the shooting death of Carson City Deputy Carl Howell. Howell was killed Saturday when responding at 2:18 a.m. to a domestic call near the 4100 block of Montez Drive after a man opened fire and Howell returned fire. The suspect died at the scene and Howell later died at the hospital.

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are considered innocent until proven guilty in court. MONDAY At 5:19 p.m., Donald Wilk, 43, of Carson City, was arrested on suspicion of felony assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, obstruction, resisting arrest with violence, domestic battery-first offense and ex-felon failed to register after deputies responded to reports of a domestic battery near the 1000 block of Siskiyou Drive. Wilk allegedly threatened officers with a Jack Daniels bottle and was tazed twice by officers after resisting arrest. Bail was set at $24,450.

Voter registration up in July as major parties post increases

Nevada active voter registration increased by more than 8,000 in July to more than 1.43 million. But about a third of that increase was the result of inactive voters reporting to county election officials and reactivating their status. Overall, total registration grew by about 5,500.

Torres enters guilty plea for assault on Carson City officer

David Torres entered a guilty plea in Carson City District Court on Tuesday for assault on a peace officer by a probationer. Torres was arrested May 24 after deputies responded to reports of a man threatening to throw his infant into a swimming pool near the 400 block of Saliman Road. Upon the arrival of deputies, Torres threw a bicycle at two officers before leading deputies on a foot pursuit across 5th Street where he was cornered in the Juvenile Detention grounds and threatened officers by pretending he had a gun in his waistband and yelling “bang” as he pretended to pull it out. One deputy, injured during the incident, is on medical leave for a year.

Northern Nevada multi-agency operation conducts sex offender registry checks

During the weekend, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with other agencies across Nevada conducted more than 200 sex offender registration checks during Operation Vigilance. Last Thursday through Saturday, the Nevada Department of Public Safety Division of Parole and Probation along officers from Carson, Lyon, Storey and Douglas counties, Nevada Department of Corrections Inspector General’s Office and the United States Marshals Service conducted knock and talk searches to make sure that all sex offenders were registered with the most up-to-date information in the four counties.
