Funeral services Thursday for fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell

Funeral services for Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl G. Howell, 35, will be held Thursday in Reno.

Howell was killed in the line of duty Saturday morning after deputies responded to calls at 2:18 a.m. of a physical domestic disturbance at the 4100 block of Montez Drive. As Howell was talking to a female victim, a male, later identified as, 30-year-old Jonathon Pope of Carson City, came out of the house and started shooting at the officer.

According to officials, Howell was able to return fire and kill Pope.

Funeral services for Howell will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center St. in Reno.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong apologized that services couldn’t be held in Carson City, but said, “that decision was made only after the tremendous out-pouring of community strength and support became so evident.”

Furlong said the funeral procession — family and dignitary — will begin at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home, 3945 Fairview Dr., proceed past the Carson City Public Safety Complex and Nevada State Capitol, and then join the remainder of the procession at North Carson Street and College Parkway intersection. The procession is expected to begin shortly after 9 a.m.

Howell started with the sheriff’s office on March 13, 2006. He also served in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned with the CCSO to Court Services, he was on temporary assignment to Operations Patrol Division.

Howell, of Lyon County, is survived by his wife, Rachel, and their four children ages 7-12.

“The staff of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office wishes to express our deepest condolences to the family of Deputy Carl Howell,” Furlong said Sunday evening. “We are also appreciative of the tremendous outpouring of support from both the local and national community.”

Furlong said, “while the staff, employees and families of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office have been devastated by this tragedy, law enforcement service levels have remained constant without interruption. Some delays in service response times to “Non-Emergency” calls for service may be experienced during funeral services.”

The Sheriff’s Office administrative functions will be closed on Thursday to allow employees to participate in funeral services. Normal operations will resume at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Furlong said an account to receive donations is anticipated, but has not yet been established.

The Sheriff also said, “the staff of the Sheriff’s Office wishes to extend our gratitude to the Nevada State Health and Human Services for providing an immediate response “Crisis Response Team” for employees and others who have been devastated by this tragedy. Both individual and group needs are being assessed and met for the short and long term bereavement.”
