Major traffic delays and on-ramp closures are expected in Carson City and Reno Thursday for the funeral of the fallen Carson City deputy.
Carl Howell’s funeral is being held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Reno Events Center, starting with a processional from Carson City to Reno at 9 a.m.
The processional will begin at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, pass the Capitol and continue onto Reno from north Carson Street.
Motorists can expect delays on northbound I-580 with all northbound ramps being closed as the procession passes. The same will occur at I-80 West heading into Reno, with traffic being stopped between Rock Boulevard and I-580 for the processional to make its way to Center Street West ramp.
The ramp closures are expected to be short, however, officials advise travelers to use surface streets or alternate routes.
There’s also a large amount of traffic expected around the Events Center and officials are encouraging the public to use available downtown parking.
Because several hundred people are expected to be attending, parking around the Events Center is going to be limited at the National Bowling Stadium. Officials said the general public should use surrounding parking garages in the area.
In Reno, there also will be numerous street closures around the downtown area beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday including: N. Virginia Street from 6th to 4th streets, Virginia Street south of the intersection from 4th to 2nd streets, 5th Street, Plaza, and Commercial east of Virginia to Center streets.
Center Street will remain open with the exception of the northbound lane on the east side of the street, and 4th Street will remain open for citizens to travel west and east.
