Carson City sees gas prices under $2 a gallon

Gasoline averaged $2.53 per gallon in Nevada, a drop of 5.4 cents from a week earlier, a survey completed Sunday and released Monday showed.

The decrease by more than a nickel still had the statewide average from a survey of 1,130 outlets in the state higher than any price registered Monday in Carson City, according the surveying GasBuddy.com website. In Carson City the lowest trio of stations Monday posted prices of $1.99 per gallon, while the single highest of 24 total outlets checked in at $2.49 per gallon.

Nationally, the gas price monitoring website said, the Sunday average was $2.04 per gallon, down 2.4 cents from the previous Sunday.

“Gasoline prices over the weekend and holiday were certainly quite cheap compared to prior years and other holidays this year,” said Patrick DeHaan, a GasBuddy.com petroleum analyst. He said the website is focused mainly on an upcoming OPEC meeting to see where gas prices may head later. Oil exporting countries may stand pat, according to the analyst.

“There are expectations that OPEC will continue to kick the can down the road and not change production levels,” he said, but he also hedged his bet. “If there are surprises either way, it could definitely be felt at the pump and into 2016.”

In Nevada, meanwhile, the website reported gas prices after the latest survey were 44.5 cents lower than on the same day a year earlier and 19 cents lower than a month earlier.
