Senator Square: Carson High School Link Crew can help with exams

Finals are just around the corner. Link crew leaders are ready to help you study for your exams. Most semester exams are worth 20 percent of your overall grade. Think you have it all figured out? Have a Link leader check your work. Get free cookies and hot chocolate while you study. This event takes place in the library every day this week from 2:15 to 3:55 p.m. Come as many days as you’d like as each day focuses on a different subject. A late bus will be available at 3:50 for students wanting to stay and study. The following schedule will be in place for freshmen to attend and receive help. Tuesday: English. Wednesday: Science. Thursday: Math. Friday: Transitions/Electives.

CHORAL DEPT NEWS

The Musical Theater Winter Concert will be at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center on Tuesday. The Choral Winter Concert will be at 7 p.m. at the Community Center on Wednesday. For more information about these events, contact asonnemaker@carson.k12.nv.us.

BAND DEPT NEWS

The CHS Instrumental Music Department is pleased to announce its annual Holiday Concert, titled, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” The concert will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the Community Center. SPEECH/DEBATE NEWS

Speech and debate is hosting its annual Winter Exhibition from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday in the upstairs cafeteria. Come see a sampling of all the events Carson competes in at this entertaining and educational event. The event is free. Also junior debate student Shaylin Segura qualified to compete in the Carson TEDx talk this coming March.

YEARBOOK SALE

The CHS Publication Staff who publish the Senator News newspaper and the Carneta yearbook is offering the best Christmas present ever. Gift cards toward the purchase of a 2016 Carneta yearbook and/or personal buddy ad are available until Dec. 10. You may purchase a gift card for any amount of $10 or more. Staff member Brooke Morris has designed gift cards that’s going to look so nice hanging on Christmas trees or in envelopes beneath the tree. This may also be the time to order your yearbook as a Christmas gift. Buddy Ads that celebrate friendships, family and graduation are also available. UN PILGRIMAGE CONTEST

CHS Juniors can apply for an all-expense paid trip to New York City and the United Nations. Tour the United Nations Building, listen to behind the scenes briefings, attend a Broadway play, and visit the Empire State Building. This is open to juniors ages 16 and 17. Pick up applications in the Guidance Office. Applications are due to Guidance by Dec. 11 by 2:30 p.m.

SKI TEAM FUNDRAISER

On Dec. 11, the CHS ski team will be showing the Warren Miller film “Chasing Shadows” at the Carson City Community Center. The movie starts at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30. Student tickets are $8 and adults are $12. You can get tickets from any member of the ski team. There also will be a raffle that evening. Come support the Carson High ski team.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CLASS

During Carson City Schools’ Bullying Prevention month, the Carson High School Graphic Design II classes created their own anti-bullying posters with many students taking their own photos for their poster. STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s student of the week is Brittany Cuevas. Brittany is a hard working student who has done a commendable job at CHS. Along with her honors and AP classes she’s found time to complete the Health Science Medical Program of study and is currently enrolled in the pharmacy technician class. Thanks for all your hard work at Carson High Brittany.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

The Senior Spotlight this week is Feiyang Ye. Feiyang is an amazing student, moving to Carson City from Shanghai, China (the largest city in China with a population of more than 24 million) almost two years ago. He learned English in China which has served him well, as he has excellent grades in all of his classes, including the Advanced Placement and Honors classes he takes. Feiyang is a well-informed student and articulate in his ideas in his classes. Additionally, he provides a different perspective to classmates on a variety of topics, especially as it relates to China. Feiyang maintains a 3.97 weighted GPA at Carson High School and plans on attending the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall and studying Engineering with an emphasis in Aerospace. Carson High is proud of his accomplishments and we know with Feiyang’s strong work ethic and his ability to go above and beyond what’s asked of him, he’s guaranteed to be a success in all of his future endeavors.
