Youth Theatre Carson City is putting on “Yes, Virginia: The Musical,” a holiday classic based on the Macy’s and NBC Holiday special of the same name.
The show will run two performances, at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 and 2 p.m. Dec. 20, in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.
“Yes, Virginia: The Musical” has been adapted for children and families by Macy’s, in partnership with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
The story follows 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon, who has always loved Christmas. Until the day her classmates bring up the age-old question: “Is there a Santa Claus?” Not sure what to believe, Virginia ventures into the city to find out for herself. Along the way, she consults some unusual characters: a scraggly Santa ringing a bell, an excitable librarian with a shelf full of Christmas books, and her quirky doctor father. Unable to find the answers she’s looking for, Virginia writes to The New York Sun newspaper. Her letter makes its way to the desk of curmudgeonly editor Francis Church, who has better things to do than respond to a little girl’s questions. But through Virginia’s determination (and a little help from a scraggly Santa), Mr. Church is persuaded to write his answer ... an answer that becomes the most famous newspaper editorial of all time.
The Carson City production is presented by the Youth Theatre Carson City Showstoppers, a group of performers, hand-picked from members of the YTCC program. Made up of 23 local singers, dancers and actors ages 7-17, the Showstoppers tour the area bringing their love of the arts to their community. The Showstoppers have been selected to perform in Disneyland in March, and “Yes, Virginia: The Musical” is a fundraiser to help them get there.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.
