Carson City’s Fuji Park emergency warming shelter is opening tonight, as it will be Christmas night and through the weekend, according to FISH (Friends In Service Helping).
“The shelter may be open longer based on the overnight low temperatures, 15 degrees or below, forecasted by the Nevada Appeal,” FISH said in a news release.
Beth McCready-White, FISH client services manager, said in the release the shelter will be open from 8:30 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Friday morning for those without places elsewhere to stay.
Previously, an announcement had been made the shelter would be open Friday night, which is Christmas night, as well as on Saturday and Sunday nights with hours from 6:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. through each night.
In addition, if people need a ride to the shelter they can be picked up by 6 p.m. at FISH, 138 E. Long St., for transport to the Fuji Park facility at the city’s south edge.
The facility is operated by FISH, which coordinates with city government and the Red Cross to keep people sheltered from the elements during periods of freezing temperatures and inclement weather.
The Fuji Park shelter takes people who are intoxicated but don’t actually possess alcohol or drugs, people who have pets but only when they are under the owner’s supervision, those without other shelter and those who aren’t a danger to themselves or others.
“We will be having volunteers who will be proctoring the warming shelter,” said FISH.
