The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: Hip, hip hooray (do cheerleaders actually still say that?) for the Carson High cheerleaders. Carson’s varsity cheerleaders took on some of Northern California’s best and won United Spirit Association USA Open 2015 Division Championship last Sunday at the University of California-Davis to earn a spot in the USA High School Spirit Nationals in Anaheim, w.
Now Carson’s cheerleaders will have the chance to take on some of Southern California’s best at nationals in March and will need $8,000 to make the trip. Those interested in helping can contact coach Sheila Story at 775-283-1675 or coach Mikayla Story at 775-720-9476. Donations can be sent to Carson High School, Attn: Carson High School Varsity Cheerleading Team, 1111 N. Saliman Road, Carson City 89702.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Sparks’ Brian Crane for his success in drawing the Pickles comic strip, which is syndicated in more than 900 newspapers worldwide. “Mr. Pickles” spoke at a Retired Public Employees of Nevada meeting at the Carson City Senior Center on Tuesday and he was just as entertaining as his comic strip.
SILVER DOLLAR: The Bently Enterprises who will preserve the past of the iconic structure, the 109-year-old Minden Flour Milling Co. building as it goes through renovations this summer as its turned into the Bently Heritage Estate Distillery.
WOODEN NICKEL: To Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll for not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch with the National Football League Championships, otherwise known as the Super Bowl, on the line. As Darrell Royal said, “Ya dance with the one who brung ya.” And since Carroll made the wrong decision, there was no dancing in Seattle.
