Naval Air Station Fallon’s leadership recently held an information fair in the base gym with sailors, civilians and family members.

Hosted by Commanding Officer Capt. Leif Steinbaugh, the fair gave base personnel and their dependents valuable information on base and local resources, as well as allowing the opportunity to ask questions to the skipper.

“I think it’s fantastic,” said Steinbaugh. “We had a great turnout from folks in the community to show what kind of services they can provide as well as Sailors coming out to see what resources are out there.”

The fair included booths representing many base services, from MWR and FFSC to the Environmental Department, Medical and Fed Fire. Food was provided by the Silver State Club and King Pin Pizza. In addition a host of community organizations were on hand to pass out information, answer questions, and help people get involved. There were tables from the Lions, Fallon Rotary, Churchill Arts Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Theater project, the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge, as well as Embry Riddle and Navy College, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, NEX, Lincoln Housing, and the Fallon Community Coalition.

NAS Fallon’s Community Support Programs led by Terry York organized the layout of the fair and provided door prizes, refreshments and information tables.

“We provide quality of life for the base,” said York. “From childcare, to counseling, to food and drink, our sailors expect a certain quality of life, and we’re here to provide it. We work so hard to find the best ways to support base personnel that if we ever have to tell them ‘no,’ they know we’ve exhausted all options.”

The fair is part of a bi-annual community information strategy designed to increase the flow of information from base leadership to base personnel and their families.

“A lot of folks come here, especially from the Navy side, who haven’t been stationed here before,” said Steinbaugh. “It’s a different community then what they’re used to and they’re not sure what’s out there or how to get involved in the community. This event gives them an opportunity to connect with individuals and organizations in our community to help them find an activity, service project, or cause to support.”

Families who attended the event enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of base and local resources.

“I love these events because it gets information out to everyone,” said Kimberly Arthur, NAS Fallon’s school liaison officer. “It’s great because it gives me a chance to meet the families and includes the community, so everyone gets involved.
