Sande Rowan, a basket maker, teacher and author, will share a brief history of basket making and demonstrate the traditional coiling techniques she practices in a SENarts event at the Nevada Legislature from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The event is part of The Work of Artists, a series of programs scheduled throughout the legislative session.
Working with Native American basket makers in the Southwest, Rowan learned practices she incorporated into her own style. Using pine needs she gathers in the Sierra, Rowan makes baskets that feature a variety of bindings and adornments. Her “rainbow spiral” pine needle basket is among works featured in Pine Spirit at the Legislative eXhibition Series Gallery through Feb. 20 in the Nevada Legislative Building.
Rowan, the author of “Pine Spirit: A Modern Approach to the Ancient Art of Coiled Basket Making,” teaches workshops and classes at guilds, retreats and private classes.
