CAC’s February film series will conclude tonight with a screening of the 1991 film “Thelma & Louise” at the Art Center. Tickets are $7 for CAC members, $10 for nonmembers and can be purchased in the Center’s Art Bar beginning at 6 p.m. The film will begin at 7 p.m.
The film was directed by Ridley Scott who also directed many well-known films including “Blade Runner,” “Alien,” “Black Hawk Down,” and many others.
The film stars Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen and in his first role in a major motion picture, Brad Pitt.
It won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay (written by Callie Khouri) and was also nominated for Best Director, Cinematography and Editing. Both Sarandon and Davis were nominated for Best Actress.
It also won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and was nominated for Globes for Best Picture and Best Actress (both Sarandon and Davis again).
It is both “buddy movie” and road film in which two women set off on a trip but soon become outlaws pursed by the police. It has been hailed as being one of the major films to pass the so-called Bechdel Test, a means of assessing how a film portrays its female characters.
In order to pass the test a film has to have at least two women in it, who have names, who talk to each other, about something other than men.
It also features a great soundtrack including songs performed by Kelly Willis, Tammy Wynette, The Temptations, Marianne Faithful, B.B King and others.
Seats are rapidly filling up for “An Evening With the Arts,” CAC’s fundraising dinner and silent auction.
The evening will feature a beef tenderloin and half-lobster tail (or mushroom ravioli), dinner catered by the Slanted Porch, as well as a silent auction of an eclectic array of artwork, weekend getaways and other items donated by local and regional businesses.
Tickets are $70 per person and include dinner, wine, admission to the auction and a copy of the catalog.
For an additional $10 you can also receive $20 worth of raffle tickets. To get your seats, you can call Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.
