Dec. 15, 1926 - Feb. 6, 2015
Robert L. Kennedy, 88, of Carson City, Nevada passed away at Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center on February 6, 2015 after a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Joanne, children Steven (Marilyn) of Sacramento, California, Peter of Petaluma, California, Marty (Jeff) Mozzochi of Vancouver, Washington and Sarah (Dennis) Teutschel of Petaluma, California; stepchildren Marie Crossen of Los Angeles, California, Paul Lauria of Menifee, California and Roseanne (Blaise) Tracy of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In addition, Robert enjoyed 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. After growing up in the Bay Area and Bakersfield, California, Robert attended the University of California, graduating from Berkeley in 1951. Before graduating, Robert enlisted in the Army in 1945, serving in the Philippines. After graduation, Robert began work at Contra Costa College bookstore, then Sacramento City College, and UCLA student store before managing the Cal Berkeley student store in 1966. While managing the Chapman College bookstore in Orange County in the mid-70’s, he met Joanne. They moved to Carson City in 1977 and operated Kennedy’s Books for two decades. Shortly after arriving in Carson City, Bob became active in community affairs. His community involvement would touch virtually all aspects of Carson City. He was instrumental in the planning and development for the new Carson City Senior Center beginning in 1978. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1984-85. He chaired the Whistle-Off, and helped initiate the Carson City Rendezvous. Bob also served on the forerunner of the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, previously known as the Fair and Tourism Board. The Parks and Recreation Commission and Carson City School Board were other areas of service. As a board member of the Brewery Arts Center, he served as Director during a period of transition. His service club involvement began with Sertoma, serving as President in 1983 and then shifted to his active participation in the Carson City Rotary Club. His love of books continued to the later years in his life with Bob reducing his involvement to something “near and dear” to his heart, the Carson City Library Board. Those who knew Bob, knew that any conversation involving the San Francisco Giants would be a magnet for him. While the Giants provided him many wonderful memories, none was more profound than his attendance at the “earthquake” game in the 1989 World Series. Services are scheduled Saturday, February 14th at 11AM at First Presbyterian Church, 115 N. Division St., Carson City, Nevada. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Robert L. Kennedy can be best remembered with a contribution or donation to the Friends of the Carson City Library. FitzHenry’s Funeral Home is trusted with arrangements
