Conservative activist Chuck Muth has registered a Political Action Committee to try to recall Assembly Speaker Designate John Hambrick from office.
Hambrick, a Republican, was re-elected in District 2. It includes the western side of metropolitan Las Vegas, a post he has held since 2009.
He was named Speaker-designate following the resignation of Ira Hansen of Sparks after allegations of racism were levied against Hansen over a series of newspaper columns he wrote for the Sparks Tribune several years ago.
Muth and some other tea party activists were angered by Hambrick’s decision to remove Michele Fiore from the leadership posts, including majority leader and prospective chairman of the Assembly Taxation Committee.
The in-fighting split the 25 member caucus nearly evenly between the more moderate members and those — mostly newly elected members — to the right of them.
Muth registered the “Recall Hambrick PAC” with the Secretary of State’s elections division Dec. 29.
The filing lists Muth as registered agent for the recall PAC and three “directors” — Kristopher Del Campo, A.J. Maimbourg and Russ Martin.
The secretary of State’s office says the PAC would need to collect some 4,100 signatures — 25 percent of those who voted in Hambrick’s district in November — in order to force a recall election.
Hambrick is slated to be officially designated as Speaker of the Assembly on Feb. 2, the first day of the 2015 Legislature.
