Carson Animal Services Initiative, or CASI, is holding a meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Business, Resource Innovation Center, 108 E. Proctor St., to plan this year’s Woofs, Wine and Whiskers fundraiser.

CASI meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser St.

Weekly Spanish class for beginners offered

Basic Spanish and Latino culture is covered in free weekly classes from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Wednesdays at United Latino Community, 1711 N. Roop St.

Weight loss support offered

Dayton Valley Community Center, 170 Pike St., hosts a weight loss support group at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, when members are invited to share nutritious recipes and health and fitness tips.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s certified Community Health Advocates are in attendance and offer information about diabetes self-management, tobacco cessation and more.

A lower-intensity Zumba class follows every other meeting. Attendees of the dance class do not have to attend the weight loss support meeting.

The weight loss support group is free, but members are asked to contribute $5 per month to the Dayton Preservation Committee for the use of its building.

Marine Corps League meets Thursday

Active duty service members and their families as well as veterans are encouraged to attend Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment of Carson City’s meeting on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Hall on the corner of Curry and Second streets.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The meeting will follow from 7 to 8 p.m.

Annual Muscle Powered meeting Saturday

Muscle Powered’s annual membership meeting and potluck will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 212 N. Division St.

Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share and their own place setting; water, soda, tea and decaffeinated coffee will be provided.

The meeting will review last year’s report and review proposed projects for this year. It will also install this year’s board, whose makeup has been amended so members can serve a year in the position of president, treasurer, or secretary-elect prior to holding office.

Training for foster, adoptive parents planned

Division of Child and Family Services is holding foster and adoptive parent training from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Valley View Room of Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Pkwy.

Children need foster and adoptive care when their safety and protection is not met by their parents or caregiver.

The training sessions use Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education, a curriculum of nine three-hour sessions designed to equip applicants to provide foster and adoptive care to children in the child welfare system.

Foster parents are required to attend a pre-service training prior to obtaining a license. A foster family must meet all minimum licensing standards as established by Nevada Revised Statutes 424, and licenses are renewed annually.

Local dog featured in national event

Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill, 3530 N. Carson St., is hosting a viewing party of the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge, which features Carson City’s Michon Mills and her Belgian Malinois, India, at noon Saturday.

The event airs nationally on NBC. Light appetizers will be provided at the viewing party.

Authors of Virginia City book to feature Jan. 22

Ron and Susan James, authors of “A Short History of Virginia City,” will present and hold a book signing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22 at Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.

The James’ book includes an illustrated walking tour of more than 30 Virginia City buildings and sites.

The presentation is part of the museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series. Doors open at 6 p.m. Early arrival is recommended.

Admission is $8 for adults and free for museum members and ages 17 and under.

Series of horticulture classes offered

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Nevada Department of Agriculture is offering a series of eight classes about the green industry from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays Feb. 3-26 at Washoe County Cooperative Extension, 4955 Energy Way in Reno.

The courses, geared for green industry professionals such as landscapers and nursery workers, cover a variety of topics.

Plant disease basics will be on Feb. 3; integrated pest management and pesticide safety will be on Feb. 5; soils, potting mixes and fertilizers will be on Feb. 10; pruning landscape plants will be on Feb. 12; insect identification will be on Feb. 17; sustainable turf grass maintenance will be on Feb. 19; weeds and weed law will be on Feb. 24 and woody plant identification will be on Feb. 26.

The cost is $15 per class or $80 for all eight. Discounts are available to organizations enrolling multiple employees.

Classes are taught by Cooperative Extension and Nevada Department of Agriculture staff with local industry professionals. Certifications are also available.

Earth Spirit Faire planned Feb. 7-8

Healing arts, psychic readings, vendors, workshops and more will be featured at Earth Spirit Faire, whose proceeds benefit the Esperanza Foundation and Heart to Heart School.

The event, sponsored by The Goddess’ Shoppe, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 7 and 8 at the Fuji Exposition Hall on Old Clear Creek Road.

There will be workshops on acupuncture, yoga, candles, dance, gardening therapy and more.

Admission costs $6 for one day or $10 for both days. Children 6 and under are admitted free.
