We have talked about the importance of driver’s looking out for pedestrians in crosswalks and along the roadways. So far this year, the weather has been mild but the nights have still been cold and most pedestrians continue to wear dark colored clothing at night.

It is most important that you as the individual walking the city at night be seen. Visibility is limited during darkened hours and despite most thinking, you do not always have the right of way when crossing the roadway.

Just as we ask motorists to be courteous and allow the pedestrian to reach the other side of the street before continuing down the road, you should give the same courtesy to the driver by being seen at night and ensuring that the driver sees you and is slowing before crossing.

Carry a flashlight or purchase clothing that has reflective material. Many items can be found from orange reflective vests to clip on flashing and steady lights that will help you to be seen. Working together, we can reduce the number of vehicle versus pedestrian crashes this year.
