In a dominating performance leading into the home stretch of the season, Jordan Schultz captured his first title of the season.

The senior Fallon wrestler won the 145-pound championship at the annual Kiwanis Invitational on Saturday in Spring Creek.

As a team, Fallon placed ninth with 121.5 points. Lowry’s Blue squad won the title with 224 points.

Schultz opened the tournament with a pair of pins followed by a 14-8 win over Reed’s Chase Heit in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Schultz was just as dominant in a 10-2 major decision over Grant Bjomn of Twin Falls (Idaho).

In the final, however, it took all of Schultz’s skill to get past Irving Capuchino of Caldwell (Idaho) in a 1-0 decision. Schutlz improves to 23-10 overall.

David Hughes (22-4 overall) went 4-1 and placed second at 170. His first four bouts were won by pin including a first-round pin over Nyssa’s (Idaho) Jose Candelas.

Hughes, though, lost a close match in the title bout to Reno’s Andrew Berreyesa, 3-2.

At 160, Sam Goings (32-8 overall) placed third with a 5-1 record. He beat Elko’s Jake Pengelly by pin in the quarterfinal, but lost to Broc Smith of Virgin Valley, 2-1, in semifinal.

In the third-place bout, goings dropped Lowry’s Shaun Manta, 10-1, in a major decision.

Jack Swisher (138), coming off a shoulder injury, returned to the mat and took fifth place. The sophomore went 5-2 and scored a 4-2 win over Koy Meredith of Minico (Idaho).

Mason Smith (113) and Dylan McAfee (120) were the only other Wave wrestlers to notch more than two wins. Each went 3-2 and lost in the consolation round.

Conner Card (145) finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark, while Terry White (106), Matt Goings (152), Aaron Rogers (182) and Wyatt Hampton (220) each went 1-2.

Leo Aicher (132), Byrson Abe (160), Chase Hyde (0-2) and Garrett Snooks (220) each went 0-2.

Fallon has only two regular-season tournaments left including Friday and Saturday’s event in Fernley. From there, Fallon will compete in the Northern I-A duals at Lowry, which will seed every grappler for the regional tournament Feb. 6-7 in Spring Creek.
