Hoodlums. A gang of drunken hoodlums made a raid on the Piute [sic] camp and abused all the Indians they met. Natchez hunted up an officer, and he restored peace. If the Indians should do what any white man would — defend their homes by shooting a few of the hoodlums — we believe public opinion would say “served,” (Humboldt Register).

Washington’s birthday. The Carson Guard gives a ball and reception for their friends to celebrate Washington’s birthday. A committee has been appointed to make the arrangements

Orphans Home completion. The building is supplied with electric lighting, the wainscoting and banisters are of polished oak, and the home heated by steam. W. H. Kirk of the V. &T. R. R. Co. designed the plans. The original home was destroyed by fire July 4, 1902. None of the children were hurt in the fire.

70 Years Ago

Spanking harms girls. London — Caning of girls in public elementary schools should be prohibited. A recommendation to this effect is contained in a letter from Dr. Kitching to the Board of Education. Dr. Kitching points out that in certain cases caning is a form of punishment that involves serious risk. In the case of boys, the risk must be accepted.

Gov. Grant Sawyer’s daughter Gail opposes lowering of the voting age to 18. Gail doesn’t feel the average 18 year old is ready to vote.

Dema Guinn greeted 200 people at the Governor’s Mansion as the Rural Health Center project brought out Nevada’s first Mammovan. She made it clear she intends to raise money to provide treatment for cases of cancer discovered by professionals who operate the van.
