Carson City Little League squads eliminated from tournament

And then there was one.

Two Carson City all-star teams lost and got bounced out of the consolation bracket at the District 1 Tournament Tuesday night at Governors Field.

The Carson 11s were routed by Reno American, 12-1, as Jared Stevenson hit two thee-run homers, including a walk-off in the bottom of the fourth to make it a mercy rule game. The Carson 10s gave up six fourth-inning runs and dropped a 6-4 decision to National Providence.

The two losses leave just the Carson 12s alive in the consolation bracket. Carson plays tonight at 8 in an elimination game.

The 10-year-old team started with two impressive wins and then dropped three straight.

“We did ourselves in tonight,” Carson manager Terry George said. “One mental mistake led to a bunch of smaller mistakes.

“The kids hit the ball well and I thought we played great defense (except the one inning). We just had one bad inning. They hit the ball and played good defense.”

Carson took a 3-0 lead, scoring single runs in the first, second and fourth innings.

In the first, Carson used singles by Ethan Reynolds and Thomas Burchett plus two errors to grab an early 1-0 lead. In the second, Quentin Beck singled and came around to score on two errors. Anthony Planetas singled and scored Carson’s third run of the game.

National Providence’s Delano Rios singled to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth and Kayden Peterson singled home the fifth run of the inning and scored himself when Carson made two throwing errors after the hit.

Carson threatened in the fifth, but didn’t score. The locals did push across a run in the top of the sixth when Decarlo Quintana singled, moved to second on an infield out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Devon Sanchez’s groundball was misplayed. Thomas Young grounded out to end the game.

Carson led just once, 1-0 in the third, in the 11-year-old contest.

Carson took the lead in the top of the third when A.J. Kunter reached first on a two-out error. He moved to second on a single by Luke Pedersen, to third on a single by Trey Thomas and scored on a single by the hot-hitting Tanner Hunt, who went 4-for-4 on Monday.

Max Gunkel looked good through the first two innings, allowing a run on two hits in the second. The roof fell in on him and his teammates in the bottom of the third, however.

Balin Dimond reached on an infield single, moved to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a one-out single by Jacob Nolan. A wild pitch moved Nolan to second and he scored on a single by Jason Murphy. P.J. Gilbert followed with a bunt single, advancing Murphy to second. Croarkin forced Gilbert at second, Murphy taking third. Stevenson followed with the first of two homers to make it 5-3. Bryson Horton singled, Mason Rowe walked, and both runners scored on a double by Dimond.

Pedersen, who relieved Gunkel after the Stevenson homer, ran into problems in the fourth.

After Gilbert grounded out, the next two batters reached base and Stevenson ended the game with a towering homer.

Trey Thomas, Alan Mayoral, Dillon Damico, Hunt and Pedersen all hit safely in the losing effort.
