The 2nd Annual Golf Tournament for the Kids & Horses Therapeutic Center was more than a sellout. Held at the Championship Course in Incline Village on June 9, the tournament was played by 152 golfers, exceeding the maximum target of 144 by eight players. The course staff led by Mike McCloskey borrowed carts from the Mountain Course and smoothly facilitated the tournament play. The scramble’s winning foursome with a score of 51 included Trevor Smith, Kelly Smith, Vince Scott and Ryan Mitchell.
Playing the tournament was once again a lot of fun. Plenty of food and beverages were available on the course thanks to generous sponsors. Two hole in one contests were available. One prize was $10,000 and the other was a new car. No one took home a prize but there is always next year. Even Mother Nature was kind. The rainstorm predicted for midday held off until play was completed.
The awards dinner featured a touching tribute to Dani Savvy, well known resident of Incline Village and a rider at Kids & Horses. Dani grew up spending winters with her family skiing at Tahoe. She was an outstanding high school athlete and, after college at San Diego State University, she joined IVGID as a ski instructor and member of the golf course staff. In 1995, Dani was in a tragic boating accident on Lake Tahoe which left her in a coma and hospitalized for five months. Her prognosis was dire. Her parents brought her home and, thanks to Dani’s strong will, she is walking independently and riding at Kids & Horses on Pepper, a large therapy horse. Her determination to improve and participate in life is inspiring to other Kids & Horses riders and staff ... and to all who know her.
Kids & Horses Director Greg Brimm and his wife, Judie, led the hardworking group of volunteers who ran the golf tournament. The Board of Directors was also represented by Directors Lorri Waldman, Joanna Rice, Curt Wegener, Pam Pugliese, Sue Woskow, Chick Crittenden and CEO Doug Brimm. Total gross revenue was $40,000 which is an 18 percent increase over last year.
