Carson City Board of Supervisors ponders joining Nevada League of Cities

Discussion and possible action Thursday by Carson City’s Board of Supervisors will include whether to consider joining the Nevada League of Cities.

Wes Henderson of the league is expected to appear and there’s going to be a municipal legislative report on the 2015 Nevada Legislature that ended last month, as well as possible action on directing city staff to examine the feasibility of Carson City joining the league. Nevada’s state capital, a consolidated community combined in 1969 with the now-defunct Ormsby County, already is a member of the Nevada Association of Counties.

A proposal is expected from the league of cities on joining it, a staff analysis on the board agenda said, “in a way that would complement the city’s membership in the Nevada Association of Counties (NACO).”

That item is one of many during the morning session of the day long meeting planned in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. The Thursday morning session begins at 8:30 a.m. and, after a lunch break, the agenda calls for the afternoon session to start in the same room at 1:30 p.m.

During that afternoon gathering, the board will adjourn and reconstitute as the community Board of Health. The health board is made up of the mayor, the four supervisors, Dr. Susan Pintar, city health officer, and Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Among various items that seven-member health unit will take up will be a presentation and discussion of the sexual assault response team project, which will involves a collaborative effort to begin offering sexual assault exams in Carson City. Currently the exams must be done in the Reno-Sparks area some 30 miles to the north. The team involves representatives from city government, Carson Tahoe Hospital and Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Also discussed by the health board will be community health coalition work on various matters. The coalition is a multidisciplinary team that includes representatives of the hospital, city Health and Human Services, the Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Department, Ron Wood Resource Center, Nevada Health Center and FISH (Friends In Service Helping).
