Carson City man involved in officer injury case to plead guilty

The man involved in an officer injury case stated in court Tuesday he’s planning on pleading guilty to assault on a peace officer.

Daniel Torres was arrested in late May after officers were called to the 400 block of S. Saliman Road for a child endangerment call. Torres was threatening to throw an infant into a swimming pool and threw a bicycle at officers when they arrived on scene. Torres tried to block himself in a nearby apartment and deputies heard women screaming from inside the residence.

Thinking someone was in danger, Carson City deputy Bob Guimont attempted to kick in the door and blew out his Achilles tendon, said Sgt. Earl Mays. Torres escaped the residence by climbing out a window and led Mays and other deputies on a chase down 5th Street, where deputies apprehending him after tazing and striking Torres with a baton. Torres had tried to escape from Mays by mimicking he had a cell phone in his waistband and pointing it at officers, yelling “bang.”

The incident resulted in Guimont being out of duty for a year.

Torres appeared in Justice Court Tuesday afternoon. He was charged with two counts of assault on a peace officer, one for throwing the bike, one for brandishing the cell phone.

The court reduced the charge to one count of assault on a peace officer by a probationer in return for Torres waiving his preliminary hearing and planning to enter a guilty plea in District Court.

Torres is also serving time for two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery, which the state plans to recommend to run concurrent to the assault charge. He also faces the charge of violation of a suspended sentence for the incident because he was out on probation at the time.

His arraignment is scheduled for August 4.
