Sate Route 839 between U.S.Highway 50 and the Denton-Rawhide Mine will be closed for a week because of flood damage.
FALLON — The Nevada Department of Transportation has temporarily closed a portion of State Route 839 east of Fallon following roadway flooding and erosion.
State Route 839, known as Scheelite Mine Road, travels south from U.S. 50 roughly between the Sand Mountain Recreation Area and the site of the Denton-Rawhide Mine. Approximately 40 vehicles use the road daily.
During the week of July 6, flash flooding covered an approximately 13-mile section of the road in as much as four feet of mud and roadway shoulders were eroded as deep as five feet in areas. For safety of the traveling public, NDOT has closed the road with repairs expecting to take about one week after engineers assessed the highway on Thursday.
“The safety and mobility of the traveling public is our top priority,” said NDOT Assistant District Engineer for Maintenance Mike Fuess. “We will be working with contractor partners under an emergency repair contract to repair and make the road safe and passable for the public as soon as possible.”
