Swirczek takes oath for new city position

Ryan Swirczek was recently appointed as Fallon’s deputy director Public Works by Mayor Ken Tedford.

Swirczek has worked for the city of Fallon continuously since February 1998. A few years after graduating from Churchill County High School, Swirczek was first hired in the Sanitation Department, driving sanitation trucks and learning all the department’s routine duties. Due to his excellent performance, City Engineer Jim Souba said in 2002 Swirczek was promoted to the Streets Department, where he continued to operate a variety of equipment.

In 2004 Swirczek was promoted again to the Water Department, where he earned certification to operate and maintain the city’s potable water distribution system. In 2005, the Water and Streets departments were combined, and due to Swirczek’s experience and knowledge, Souba said, of Public Works, he was selected as the lead worker for the department, working for upervisor Jerry Mayfield for 10 years until Mayfield’s retirement in 2008.

Shortly thereafter, the Public Works and City Engineer departments were combined, and Swirczek was selected as the Public Works superintendent, where he directly supervised and ran the day-to-day operations of all Public Works functions. I

n July of 2015, his position changed to an appointed status and retitled as the deputy director of Public Works.

“Swirczek is delighted to serve under the appointment of Mayor Tedford,” Souba said, “and very pleased to be entrusted with the responsibility to manage the day-to-day operations of the city’s Public Works functions.”

Souba said those duties include supervision of the city streets, water system, sewers and lift stations, sanitation equipment, transfer station and landfill, electrical system, parks, swimming pool and building maintenance.

“Swirczek is further humbled to supervise and lead the dedicated and hard working crew of the Public Works Department, which he considers part of his extended family,” he said.

Swirczek and Valerie Lightfootk are parents of Matthew, their 13-year-old son who is entering his freshman year at CCHS. Ryan Swirczek is a Nevada native who served 14 years in the Fallon Churchill Fire Department. He enjoys fishing, shooting and a variety of outdoor activities.
