Carson City Sheriff’s Department welcomes new deputy

The Carson City Sheriff’s Department welcomed a new deputy Friday at a ceremony at the Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Jerauld, a Sparks native, has been with the Carson City Sheriff’s Department for about six months as a reserve in training and the front desk manager at the sheriff’s office.

Jerauld said he had always wanted to be a police officer but the time there were no openings at the department, but Sheriff Ken Furlong decided to still keep Jerauld on as a support specialist. This has been beneficial for both the department and for Jerauld to have him in this position because they got to see what sort of worker he was and it allowed him to become comfortable with the systems and how the department operated.

“Michael was an opportunity that we tried to tap where prospective officers were hired in non-sworn positions and he has done an exceptional job,” Furlong said. “He has done well and has set the bar high.”

Jerauld will be working in the jail until January when he will go into the police academy to finish his training. He was originally supposed to go at the beginning of August, but pushed it back to get sworn in and work at the Sheriff’s Department. Sworn deputies can be on duty for about 16 months before going to the academy if it wasn’t completed before. As a Nevada native, Jerauld said he wanted to become a police officer to help keep the community a safe place.

“I wanted to be a police officer since I was a kid, a family friend of ours was in Nevada Highway Patrol and got me interested in the job,” Jerauld said. “Everyone’s dream is to take down bad guys, but I want to do it to secure a nice community and if I have to take bad guys off the streets to accomplish that, I am happy to do it.”
