The big day for the annual Fallon Relay for Life is two weeks away.

With the summer’s first concert in the park on a Saturday, this year’s Relay for Life kicks off on June 19, a Friday, at 8 p.m. at the Churchill County Middle School track. Because of construction last summer, the Relay for Life moved its activities to the high school.

Brandee McCoy said Relay for Life will extend into early Saturday afternoon and end by 1 p.m.

“On Saturday morning, we’ll have an all-team yard sale and a barbecue cook-off,” she said.

McCoy said the top three contestants in the cook-off will receive prizes and awards for first, second and third places. The categories include beef, chicken and pork. Preparation for the cook-off begins on the second day at about 10 a.m., she added.

McCoy said the goal for this year’s Relay for Life is $35,000, and according to the event’s website, 14 teams and 115 participants have raised $12,825.44.

The next two weeks will be busy with various activities planned by the teams. The Fallon Rotary Club Golf Tournament tees off Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Fallon Golf Course. For information on the tournament, call Alan at 775-428-1414 or Karla Kent at Kent’s Supply, 775-423-2126.

Other activities include the following: Stockman’s Casino is selling raffle tickets for a stay at the Grand Lodge Casino at Lake Tahoe plus other prizes; Relay for Life teams are selling raffle prizes for a Samsung Galaxy tablet; and a survivors’ dinner is planned for June 15 at Stockman’s Casino.

For information on the dinner, call McCoy at 775-427-0140.

One of the final activities before teams meet at the middle school is from June 14-20 as residents help the American Cancer Society “Paint the Town Purple” in support of Relay For Life. Residents and business owners are encouraged to transform Fallon purple. Awards for first, second and third places will go to the following categories: Vehicle, house or business.

Whether people own, manage, or work at one, McCoy said individuals can turn their business purple in support of Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s annual fight against cancer. Participants remember those who died from cancer and honor those who have fought the disease and won. More than 4 million people in more than 20 countries raise funds and awareness for the war against cancer, according to relayforlife.org.
