Carson City’s WNC offering continuing ed classes

Fashion, motorcycle safety, oil painting, first aid, baby-sitting certification, foil fencing, skills for job seekers and mathematics are just some of the non-credit continuing education classes, some of which are one-day classes, being offered by Western Nevada College this summer.

The following are some of the classes being offered between mid-June and October.

Wilderness First Aid Basics will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Participants will learn how to plan in advance of an emergency and proceed with the proper response. The session covers assessment of injuries, prioritizing care, basic and more advanced first-aid techniques, prevention of disease transmission, evacuation techniques, how to obtain help and when it’s appropriate to leave in search of help. Students will experience advanced first aid through scenarios and simulated rescue outside the classroom. Also, learn how to create shelter, move someone by means of clothing drag, two-man seat carry, foot drag and log roll fireman’s carry, as well as acquire knowledge on what your first-aid kit should contain, how to take care of bleeding wounds, tourniquets, impaled objects, head and spinal injuries and fractures. Earn a two-year certificate upon course completion. The class, whose cost is $101, is open to anyone 14 and older.

Take 10 Years Off Your Look, offered Saturday, June 20, when Diane Wilkinson will divulge 10 secrets to look 10 years younger. Students will also discover 25 clothes they should drop from their wardrobe, the No. 1 fashion mistake women over 40 make, and how to build a wardrobe with chic essentials and accessories. The class costs $41.

Soft Skills for Hard Workers, offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday Aug. 3-13. The class covers skills employers are looking for in new employees, including communication, teamwork, enthusiasm and attitude, networking, problem solving, critical thinking and professionalism. Resume building and interviews are also addressed. The cost is $156.

Adult/Infant/Child CPR, offered from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9, or Thursday, Aug. 6. Join this one-day citizen responder class taught by Donna Miller. Learn infant, child and adult CPR. The class covers scene control, signals of a heart attack, stroke, conscious and unconscious choking; aspirin administration and CPR using an automated external defibrillator. Class is also open to children ages 11 to 17. The cost is $51.

Babysitting certification meets on Wednesday, July 28, or Wednesday, Aug. 5. The class is geared for teens and preteens, who can gain knowledge to become confident caregivers in a training class offered by the American Red Cross. The class includes hands-on activities, video, role-playing, first aid and lively discussions. The cost is $72.

First Aid meets Thursday, July 9, or Thursday, Aug. 6. Students will learn to recognize and care for a variety of first-aid emergencies such as burns; cuts; scrapes; sudden illnesses; head, neck and back injuries; and heat and cold emergencies. Course completion entitles the student to a first-aid certificate, which is valid for two years.

Introduction to foil fencing meets Mondays from Aug. 31 to Oct. 26. It offers the fundamentals of swordplay, attacking and defensive skills using modern French and Italian techniques and strategy. Equipment is provided. Open to students 12 and up. The cost is $301.

Bob Ross Method of Oil Painting — Parent and Child will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20. The class brings parent and child together for oil painting on one canvas. Emphasis is placed on proper use of painting tools and on the various techniques associated with completing an entire painting in one class period. In addition to a $36 class fee, there’s a $20 supply cost.

Arithmetic to Pre-Algebra, in which students can use the two-month class to prepare for the Accuplacer test, meets Mondays and Wednesdays from Aug. 19 through Oct. 28. Operations with whole numbers, fractions, division and decimals with applications to measurement are covered in this course, as well as equations and graphing with real-world applications. Textbooks are available for rental. Students 13 and older are eligible. The cost is $101.

Motorcycle Safety Program: Basic Rider Course and Advanced Rider Course meets from 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 9. Motorcycles — 250cc Honda and Suzuki — and helmets are provided for the Friday through Sunday BRC classes. In the Advanced Rider Course, students must be Class M endorsed and provide motorcycle, helmet, proof of insurance and registration. The course meets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Upcoming classes are Saturday, July 25; Saturday, Aug. 22; and Saturday, Oct. 17.
