A rain-shortened Michigan Sprint Cup race saw Kurt Busch take his second checkered flag of the season, and now NASCAR’s premier division has a rare weekend off. That is not the case for the other two touring divisions. The Camping World Trucks ran last night in Iowa. The Xfinity series will be at Chicagoland Speedway tonight. Although Cup driver Matt Kenseth isn’t racing this weekend, he’s at Chicagoland to cheer on his son Ross, who’s making his Xfinity series debut. And on this Father’s Day weekend, Ross isn’t the only son of a NASCAR racer currently running in one of NASCAR’s touring series. The Dillon brothers, Austin and Ty, are the sons of former driver Mike Dillon and grandsons of Richard Childress. Chase Elliott is following in father Bill’s tire tracks as is John Hunter Nemechek, son of Joe. Dave Blaney’s son Ryan and Johnny Sauter, son of Jim are also regulars. Who says racing isn’t a family sport?

Speaking of families, it appears Dale Earnhardt Jr. is starting one of his own, proposing to longtime girlfriend Amy Reimann during a trip to Germany last week. So could future NASCAR fans be looking at Dale Earnhardt III in a Cup car about 20 years from now?

Aside from Junior’s engagement, the big Sprint Cup news this off weekend was the announcement of new aero tweaks to the cars for the upcoming Quaker State 400 at Kentucky on July 11. The changes include a reduction in spoiler height from 6.0 to 3.5 inches, a splitter extension panel reducing the overall area from 38 to 25 inches, and 1.75 inches less splitter overhang. Teams and manufacturers are working overtime in the wind tunnel to determine what the loss of an estimated 1,000 pounds of downforce will do to handling, and what will be needed to rebalance their race cars. So far this change is for the Kentucky race only.

Formula One is racing this weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, and the point standings pretty well tell the tale of how the season has gone so far. Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg sit first and second with Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen third and fourth. Williams teammates Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa occupy the fifth and sixth points positions, and Red Bull pilots Daniel Ricciardo and Danil Kyvat are seventh and eighth. The rest of the field pretty much consists of also-rans. Hamilton appears to be well on his way to his third driving championship.

having won four of the seven races run so far this season. However, Ferrari looked strong in Friday practice with some engine upgrades, and Vettel set fast time in the second session while Hamilton languished in fifth. Rosberg expressed concern after practice, saying he and Hamilton would have to be on top of their game to beat Ferrari this weekend. One driver coming into Sunday’s race with a head of steam and a lot of confidence is Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg. The German is coming off winning the Lemans 24 hour endurance race in a Porsche, a feat few active F1 drivers have even attempted, let alone accomplished.
