An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday on a body found Tuesday morning by a hiker above Lone Mountain Cemetery at Roop Street and Winnie Lane.
A hiker found the body in a shallow grave and notified Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 10:52 a.m.
Deputies arrived at the scene and verified two shoes and a foot appeared to be exposed from a shallow grave. The sheriff’s office stated a mostly decomposed body, inside of a sleeping bag, was removed from a shallow 2 foot grave on Lone Mountain. Details regarding the identity, gender and age are pending the autopsy, the sheriff’s office said.
The area where the discovery took place is not associated with the cemetery, but is heavily traveled by the homeless population and hikers, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The Sheriff’s Office worked with the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office before removing the body. Furlong said the matter is being investigated as a “death investigation” until the cause of death can be determined. He said Carson City Sheriff’s Office investigators were searching old records of any missing persons from the area.
No other information is available as the investigation continues.
