Nov. 2, 1927 - March 16, 2015

Hope Means was born Esperanza Santos on November 2, 1927. She surprised her parents with her early arrival during a family visit in Dallas, Texas. The family lore has it that her parents, Miguel and Josephina, were too poor to give her a middle name. The family returned home to Los Angeles, California where Hope lived for over sixty years. In 1947 she met and married Jack Lewis Means and they had four children. Hope worked in manufacturing, retail and education. She loved dancing, visiting, picnics and parties but most of all driving. Los Angeles was a perfect place and she would drive for miles along the beach, through downtown and to the homes of her family and friends from San Diego to Ventura. Jack and Hope moved to Carson City, Nevada to be near children and grandchildren. They painfully parted with their Dodgers season tickets to be close to family. Hope died on March 16, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years Jack and her sisters Marie Ternes and Leonie Conway. She is survived by her sons, Glen Means of Santa Clarita, CA, Don Means of Sparks, NV, daughters, Karen Lyttle of Sparks and Jacky Gentine of Carson City, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Cascades Assisted Living, the staff and especially the nurses and attending physicians of St. Mary’s and the staff of Life Care. Their kindness and comfort made an emotionally and physically exhausting time bearable. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Diabetes Association. There will be a Rosary for Hope on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 5:00pm at Walton’s Funeral Home in Carson City. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 9:00am at St Teresa’s Catholic Church in Carson City, NV. Burial will follow at Walton’s Carson Gardens cemetery.
