Sheriff’s Office watching for unsecured loads

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is stepping up enforcement of unsecured loads along Highway 50 and adjoining roads, and it is also starting dirt bike patrols in canyons and hills around Carson City looking for illegal dumping and other unlawful activity.

The office has received complaints about pick-up trucks and trailers travelling along Highway 50 toward the city landfill with loads of refuse that are not covered or secured.

If not fixed properly, debris can end up in travel lanes or alongside the roadway as it blows out of vehicles. Larger items that fall onto the road can create a hazard and lead to a vehicle crash.

Deputies are reminding motorists it is their own responsibility to ensure their load is properly covered and secured so that it does not end up on the roadway or in the brush.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is also participating with other law enforcement in Joining Forces, a series of events focusing on distracted drivers and pedestrian safety. Events planned focus on pedestrian safety, seat belt use, speeding, and distracted and impaired driving to increase safety on roadways and reduce crashes.

Grant funding for the event, which runs through April, is provided by the Nevada Department of Public Safety — Office of Traffic Safety. Funds are used to pay for additional deputies who will be out looking for distracted drivers.

In Dayton, Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday that alleged criminal fugitives were at a residence on Shady Grove Lane.

After contacting the resident and observing suspicious illegal narcotic activity, deputies obtained a search warrant for the house. During the search, they located an illegal marijuana grow with approximately 1 3/4 pounds of marijuana, 302 grams of presumptively positive cocaine, packaging materials for the illegal sale and distribution of controlled substances, and two firearms.

Three females, Bridget Erickson-White, Debbie White, and Kelly Erickson, were arrested and transported to the Lyon County Detention Facility in Yerington for narcotic law violations, including trafficking, possession for sales, unlawful firearm possession, and a maintaining a drug house for use and sales. Kelly Erickson was also in violation of her parole and probation conditions.
