One local Carson City group is hosting a month filled with bike-related events for National Bike Month.

Muscle Powered, an organization that promotes bicycling and walking, started off the month with their celebrity bike ride Monday morning. The event, featuring key members of the Carson community, including the mayor, the sheriff, and the Board of Supervisors, was an hour long ride around Carson City that started in Telegraph Square.

“I think this is what makes Carson special,” Mayor Bob Crowell said. “We are a bronze level biking community, and biking is a huge part of our quality of life.”

The purpose of Bike Month is to encourage people to get educated about bike safety.

“We want to promote safe cycling and get people pumped up for cycling,” Jeff Moser, event organizer said. “It is a good way to get everyone out there and motivated and educated.”

A mountain bike night ride in Ash Canyon will be at 6:30 p.m. May 6 at the Foothill Road Trailhead off Winnie Lane.

A bicycle movie night is planned at 6 p.m. May 9 in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall, 511 W. King St.

Bike to Work Week Corporate Challenge is Monday through Friday, May 11-15. Public agencies and private businesses can register with Muscle Powered and compete for prizes for most miles, average miles per participant and number of trips. Sign up at MusclePowered.org.

An easy, four-mile family ride will be at 6 p.m. May 13 at the Brewery Arts Center.

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15, when coffee will be offered to bicycle commuters at participating coffee shops. A membership party and fundraiser will be at 5:30 p.m. on the same day at Firkin & Fox, 310 S. Carson St., Suite 100. The event includes a helmet decorating booth and raffles.
