Two Nevada poets will be recognized today for being awarded fellowships through the Nevada Arts Council.
Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley will be sharing some of their work at a free program at Western Nevada College at 4 p.m. in the Main Gallery. Each poet was granted a year-long fellowship that will provide them with time, materials and living expenses to develop their work.
“Writing poetry can be lonely, difficult work, so the fellowship is a vote of confidence,” Stanley said. “It reminds me that I’m not crazy for pursuing this art that I’m still in love with, sixteen years after deciding I wanted to write poems.”
Wetherington said that she will be using some of the time to explore the definition of madness, but during the poetry program, audience members can expect to hear a poem about two stories, one about teaching English abroad in France and one about dropping into Normandy on D-Day.
As a fan of Wetherington’s work, Stanley said that he’s excited to hear Laura’s work again, as well as visiting with the students.
“As a former community college student, I look forward to meeting students and faculty at Western Nevada College, and talking about reading and writing with them. I also look forward to hearing Laura read again,” Stanley said.
