Carson Middle School student honored

Knights of Columbus and Delaney Sanchez, the daughter of former Carson educator Herb Chiara, presented Kassandra Karpus with the Herb Chiara Memorial Award Wednesday at Carson Middle School.

Karpus was recognized by the school staff as the most improved graduating eighth grader.

Funds for the award were provided by Delaney’s brother Dr. Geoffrey Chiara and by the Knights of Columbus. Herb Chiara was a member of Sierras Madre Council 4781 when he died in 1964. The award in his honor has been an ongoing recognition of eight graders by the Knights and the Chiara family.

Carson women achieve at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota

Kathleen Bryant of Carson City earned a bachelor’s from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota May 9 in Winona, Minn., where 224 bachelor degrees were awarded at its 90th commencement ceremony.

Bryant was also included on the university’s Dean’s List, which also included Carson City’s Christeen Allara.

To make the list, students must achieve a 3.6 or better grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

Carson City man earns bachelor’s

Justin Barlow of Carson City graduated from Fayetteville State University with a bachelor’s in communication on May 9.

Nearly 550 undergraduate students were welcomed as alumni at Fayetteville State University’s 148th Spring Commencement. FSU Chancellor James A. Anderson, the university’s 11th chief executive officer, presided over the ceremony, and Kenyata Wesley, acting director for the Office of Small Business Programs for the Department of Defense addressed the graduates as the keynote speaker.
