Escape. Dr. Mudd attempted an escape into the bottom of a steamer and hid underneath a tarp. Men searching for him had bayonets and when discovered they used their bayonet to make their mark. Mudd rose quickly and returned to his status as captive prisoner. He was brought back to the fort and thumb-screws applied to him. He acknowledged that Kelly had agreed to help him escape in exchange for the doctor’s gold watch.

She wants the price of a single admission to be $2.50, and in times like these, in Carson or elsewhere, it won’t work. Armistice Day. All state offices will be closed for Armistice Day. Gov. Vail Pittman calls attention to the Nevada law declaring the day a legal holiday. His proclamation concludes: “I further request that on this day all Nevadans pay homage to those men who have given their lives for their country ... I recommend that patriotic programs be carried on in every community through the state and that the flag of the United States be displayed on all governmental and public buildings throughout the day.”

50 Years Ago

Minimum age 18. Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara ordered that 17-year-old servicemen be banned from duty in South Vietnam. The Pentagon said it is estimated that fewer than 1 percent of the 148,380 American military men now in Vietnam are in the 17-year age bracket.

The Carson City Community Center has received donations from two private citizens, one from Betty Bensinger of $18,000 and another from Agatha Kain $1,000 to have the kitchen at the center renovated.
