Carson City Library and Nevada Center for the Book are hosting Laura McBride, author of the 2015 Nevada Reads selection “We Are Called to Rise,” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, in the library’s Digitorium.
“We Are Called to Rise” is told in four voices — an immigrant boy whose family is struggling to assimilate, a middle-aged housewife coping with an imploding marriage and a troubled son, a social worker at home in the darker corners of Las Vegas, and a wounded soldier recovering from an injury he can’t remember getting — voices that come together around a tragedy changing those four lives forever.
McBride, a Las Vegas writer and community college teacher, is set to receive the Silver Pen Award from the Friends of the University Libraries at UNR, which recognizes excellence among emerging and mid-career writers. “We Are Called to Rise” is her debut novel.
Nevada Reads is a statewide community group read program sponsored by the Nevada Center for the Book with funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Nevada State Library and Archives.
