Dayton woman to again bring unique hats to craft fair

It’s become a tradition and once again, ‘Krochet Katy’ is coming to Carson High’s Holiday Craft Fair with virtually all of her unique creations.

Katy Gardner, who’s known for her unique hats she crochets out of yarn, is again going to be selling her products at the 21st annual Carson High Holiday Craft Fair to be held Friday and Saturday at CHS. Gardner, who’s been attending the craft fair for several years now, is going to have about 100 items for sale at the event.

Gardner, who grew up in Carson City, has lived in the area all of her life and now lives in Dayton. Gardner, who turns 37 next month, has been crocheting ever since she was 9.

Her craft turned into a business — KTT Creations — six years ago. She said an advantage of her business is it allows her to still be a mom.

KTT is prounced Katy and stands for the initials of her three children — Kendra and twin sons, Travis and Trevor. Gardner now has Facebook and Instagram pages for her business.

The business began with her sock monkey beenie, which has become her signature hat. The hat designed for children and used for newborns has actually now become more popular with adults.

Other popular hats include characters from the movies “Inside Out” and “Frozen” and the Minions. “I’ve seen so much yellow during the summer, it’s kind of crazy,” said Gardner about the Minion characters.

Football hats with colors for the 49ers, Raiders and Carson High have also become popular. Gardner has branched out to also crochet scarves, mittens and vests.

Boot cuffs designed to wear at the top of boots have also become a popular creation of Gardner. “I couldn’t make those fast enough last year,” Gardner said.

Which is saying something since Gardner can typically finish one of her creations in three to five hours. “I can crochet without even looking,” she said. “If I’m sitting down somewhere I’m crocheting.”

Gardner also said she can take custom orders of whatever a customer wants. She said she will have all of her popular items at this weekend’s craft fair and will be there during the entire fair.

More than 125 vendors selling all kinds of crafts will be at the high school from 5-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Santa also make an appearance and CHS culinary arts students will serv food.

Funds raised at the event are awarded as stipends to the school’s clubs and organizations who assist with the fair. Entry to the fair Friday night is $2, which includes a raffle ticket and re-entry for Saturday. The entry fee for Saturday is $1.50 or $1 with a canned food donation. Admission for children and students are free.

All food donations will go to FISH. The fair is put on by the Carson High Holiday Craft Fair Association, which is headed by Cathy Barbie and assisted by Colleen Krahn and Ann Britt.
