Carson City Literacy Volunteers seeking new space

Literacy Volunteers, a non-profit Carson City tutoring program now at 430 Jeanell Drive, is looking for new office space.

Jan Whitemore, executive director of the 501(c)3 program, said that FISH (Friends In Service Helping) owns the structure that houses the program and the building will be razed beginning on Nov. 1. She said that FISH intends to erect low-income housing on the site and informed Literacy Volunteers that the program had to vacate soon. She said originally she had thought she had until next year.

The program, which was housed there without charge but paid some utility costs to FISH, originally was in the building free because Garth Richards, local developer, had let them in 1,300 square feet of space after the program left the state’s archive library. Richards later donated the property to FISH.

Whitemore said the program could relocate to 1,000 square feet of space, though it also could use more if it is available, but needs free space. She said the program began in 1987 for adults and in 2007 added literacy tutoring for children as well.

Whitemore said both adults and children need this service and she is hoping another location for space develops soon.

“We have to be out by the end of October,” she said, “so we’re kind of desperate.”
