Have to laugh at indexing gas tax idea

I am responding to the article titled “Indexing of gas tax for Carson City advocated” that appeared in the Oct. 15 issue of the Nevada Appeal. I had to laugh when I read the first line, “A Washoe County official urged the Carson Area Metropolitan Organization (CAMPO) to embrace indexing of the gasoline tax.”

Even though gas sales are flat, she was probably making her plea in order to even the playing field when it comes to gas and taxes. On the day this article appeared, the lowest price for a gallon of gas in Reno was $2.62 and in Carson City, it was $2.25. Easy math tells you that filling a 10-gallon tank in Carson City will give the buyer almost one-and-a-half gallons more than if filling up in Reno. I know many people that live in Reno and work in Carson City that fill their tanks here because of the savings, as do many Tahoe people.

If the members of CAMPO want to start improving our roads, I think a good way to start is by having the developers of these new subdivisions going in to upgrade the roads around them to accommodate the traffic they will create.

Now, I realize this “indexing tax” will appear on the next Carson City ballot, and I wonder how long it’ll take the city supervisors to enact this tax if the city voters vote it down.
