SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: To our oldest adopted son

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To our oldest adopted son, 92-year-old Charles T. Sehe, who became a Nevadan when he recently fulfilled a wish by visiting the state for the first time. Thanks to the effort led by Ken Beaton and others Sehe was able to travel from his home in Minnesota to our state. He wanted to come to our state since he served heroically on the USS Nevada, which survived the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941 and went on to serve heroically during World War II. Sehe, a Pearl Harbor survivor and World War II survivor, will always be in our hearts.

SILVER DOLLAR: The the Remote Area Medical Group, an organization founded by Dr. Stan Brock, who provides free medical services for those in need all over the world. Volunteers from the group came to Carson City last week for three days and set up shop at Carson High’s Morse Burley Gym to provide needed medical services for the underinsured and uninsured. The group provided free dental, vision and other medical services and many Carson City residents who have gone without those needed services were able to receive them at the three-day RAM clinic.

WOODEN NICKEL: We’ve harped on this before about major sporting events not being on network television. FOX, which is the primary broadcaster for Major League Baseball Playoffs, should have shown every game of the National League and American League Championship Series. But the network only showed the ALCS and even shared that coverage with its cable network FOXSports1. The NLCS, meanwhile, was shown on TBS. Again, millions of Americans who opt to not have cable are locked out of watching the national pasttime’s playoff games.
