Carson football notebook: Wallace sets tone with early big gainers

MINDEN — Greg Wallace set the tone for Thursday’s game when he ripped off a 21-yard run, and followed it with a 9-yard burst.

When the smoke cleared, Wallace had carried 10 times for a season-high 186 yards and two scores to help Carson to a 42-13 win against Dougas in the regular-season finale at Keith Roman Field. “I thought I did pretty well,” Wallace said. “We really picked it up the second half.”

Wallace was explosive most of the night. He had runs of 21, 41, 31 and 55. His 41-yard TD run and his 14-yard scoring run sparked a 21-point third quarter.

“I just saw an opening,” Wallace said of his first TD run. “On the second TD (14 yards) it was a fly sweep, and I cut it back inside when I saw an opening.”

“Greg has been so consistent all year,” head coach Blair Roman said. “He does a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. He blocks for Abel (Carter), he blocks for Asa (Carter) and he blocks for Vic (Castro). Tonight, he really ran well.”

SCHULZ RETURNS

Tight end and defensive end Ian Schulz saw his most extended playing time of the season.

Schulz has been hampered by ankle injuries all season. He played mostly on offense and caught three passes for 19 yards. Carson showed a new wrinkle, spreading him out wide often.

TURNOVER ISSUES

The Senators had trouble holding onto the ball, and it was costly.

Connor Pradere let the ball get too far into his body on a third-quarter punt return, and the Tigers turned it into a TD, cutting Carson’s lead to 28-13.

Vic Castro fumbled the ball in the second quarter, but Carson managed to keep the Tigers out of the end zone when they stopped Douglas on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1.

POTPOURRI

Asa Carter had a nice interception, picking off a Bryce James pass at the Carson 8 in the second half ... Carson recorded two sacks, as Nick Andreas and Jacob Drahos shared one and Drahos also had a solo sack ... Alex Estrada, who got the start at defensive end, batted down a screen pass ... Seven different players carried the ball ... Connor Chech, a starting defensive end, was held out of the game with a hip injury... The 14 first-half points by Carson was the third-lowest Douglas has allowed this season. The Tigers led Manogue 15-0 on Oct. 2 and allowed 13 to McQueen in the opener back on Aug. 28 ... Douglas’ defense allowed an average of 45 points per game this season... Johnny Barahona failed to kick one in the end zone on a cold night. He got it inside the 5-yard line twice.
