150 Years Ago

Notes of a trip to Humboldt by John Wasson, 9-15-1865: I took a seat on the Pioneer stage and at 6 p.m. was dumped out at Stillwater 70 miles from Virginia (City). I stopped overnight and the next day took a seat in an aged two-horse hack for Star City and safely landed there where I bought a horse. I went on to Dunn Glen, a mining town and arrived at Metcalf’s Station on the Humboldt river.

All sorts: The residents of Hot Creek fear a volcanic eruption. Geo. Richards has put a maple floor on the skating rink. Selden Richards was arrested for beating Molly Kelly with a shovel.

All sorts: A light snowfall and howling gate heralding the coming of the autumnal equinox storm were in evidence this morning. The summit of Mt. Davidson and adjacent ranges were dressed in white.

Advertisement: “Carson Theater: ‘Rangers of Fortune’ with Fred MacMurray and Patricia Morrison — Two-reel musical in Technicolor and ‘Guest in the House’ with Anne Baxter and Ralph Bellamy — the boldest love story ever told — Special news ‘First Films of Japanese Cities Leveled by Atom Bombs’ — bargain night, 12 cents and 30 cents.”

Miss Carson City Pageant: The first entry for the annual pageant is Roberta Ruth Sharp, high school senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharp.

History of Ormsby House: The original Ormsby House was built in 1859 by Maj. William Ormsby and located at Second and Carson streets. It operated there for more than 60 years until it closed in 1920. Therese and Dominique Laxalt purchased the hotel in 1931. “The Basque Hotel,” by Robert Laxalt is based on his childhood growing up in Carson City. The modern Ormsby House at Fifth and Carson was built in 1972 by the Laxalts ...
