Western Nevada College in Carson City hosting exhibit by artist Anthony Arevalo

Former Western Nevada College student Anthony Arevalo welcomes the hunt of discovering art where few would look. The Northern Nevada artist collects discarded items in alleyways and dumpsters and gives them new life through his compositions.

Arevalo’s resourceful creativity is on display in his “Show Me Your Insides” exhibit this month in the Main Gallery of Western Nevada College Carson City campus.

“Anthony has continued to refine his craft and is making bold, fresh work,”said WNC Gallery Director Gil Martin.

Arevalo seeks the scraps and materials for his artwork on foot and bicycle.

“I slow myself down, taking time to ponder a possibility and enjoying the hunt,” Arevalo said. “I then assemble these discarded scraps into compositions that reference the other thing I can’t help but notice on those bike rides around town: the geometric forms and patterns of the landscape, buildings and neighborhoods I know.”

While the discarded materials have worn out their welcome for most, Arevalo’s discoveries bring them back to life.

“While the previous life of these objects may be apparent in their surface or their shape, I’m not interested in what they were so much as what they have become and, more importantly, what they could be in the future,” Arevalo said. “I’m drawn to the appearance they have taken on through years of use or weathering — the cracked surfaces and washed-out color palette that comes from being exposed to the high-desert sun.”

The exhibit runs through Friday, April 29.

WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building, 2201 W. College Parkway. The gallery is open during school hours, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
