Home & Garden Show celebrates its 16th year

For the 16th consecutive year, Soroptimist International of Fallon presents its annual Home, Garden and Recreation Show this weekend at the Fallon Convention Center.

“We’re in for a sunshine-y weekend — we hope,” said Sue Chambers, Fallon Soroptimist club president. “I think we’ve got a really good feel this year. We make it family-oriented, so there’s something for everybody. And we’ve reached out and have vendors coming from other communities — people who have never been there before, which I think is really great.”

The show takes place Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The convention center is located at 100 Campus Way, and admission is a suggested donation of $1 per adult (parking included).

Offerings are focused on interior design, bath remodeling, retractable screen doors and windows and organic gardening, as well as health-specializing booths and awe-inspiring crafts and accessories being showcased.

Bassham Furniture wanted to display things people might not know they had in their store. There’s a lot more being offered now with new technology and related to power, Katie Bassham said on behalf of the family. The latest furniture pieces that combine tech aren’t just limited to recliners or adjusting beds anymore but docking stations incorporated into night stands and end tables for more convenience.

The Body Balance Wellness Center will be present with a wide spectrum of offerings. “When we talk about spring, we often talk about spring cleaning,” said the center’s Dell Williams. “But we need to clean the inside, not just the outside — not just clean the yard, but the individual that cleans the yard.”

As attendees meander through or methodically stroll the venue, they are bound to find something that fulfills one of their needs or interests them. Meet and learn about service animals or see a real live spinning wheel in action. Some of Banner Churchill Community Hospital’s ambulance crew will be outside if people like to have their child’s car seat checked. The Nevada Division of Child & Family Services can answer questions about providing foster care in your home. Get a complimentary bioenergy scan. There will also be face-painting and 4-H “chicken poop bingo” for children.

First time vendor Linda Curtright’s Silver Dog Training Center will be in attendance along with a few of her students and their animal companions.

“We’re like a people magnet when we’re out with the dogs,” said Curtright, who has experience with disabled individuals in addition to pet obedience and behavioral training.

She also works with the disabled and their current pets to create more affordable service animal care.

The show’s chairwoman and Soroptimist volunteer, Marcia Vinson, has been in charge of the yearly event for more than a decade.

“We’ve got great vendor participation this year — very diverse,” she said. “When people come, they’ll be able to experience just a little bit of everything.”

Soroptimist International aims to improve the lives of women and girls everywhere. Vinson said proceeds from the event go toward the local club’s scholarship programs, including assistance for high school girls applying to college and women re-entering the workforce.

“This is a very dedicated group, a small group but a dedicated group of women,” said Chambers of the local Soroptimist chapter, “Over the years, they’ve really taken on different projects — locally and internationally. We really focus on aiding those in our community; you put it on a personal level when you’re working in your own backyard. We have a range of women who are members now, and they represent multiple generations. It’s fun to be able to all get together and help with the foundation in different ways.”
