Wave track and field competes in large Calif. meet

The Greenwave’s biggest competition over the weekend wasn’t the nearly 50 teams competing in the Thunder Invitational at Rocklin (Calif.) High School.

Wet weather for most of the event coupled with more than 50 teams competing affected Fallon’s track and field team on Saturday when it couldn’t finish the meet and left several races unattended. Nevertheless, the boys team — thanks to senior runner Tristen Thomson and junior thrower TJ Mauga — finished 12th and was the fourth-highest finishing team from Nevada behind Reed (second), Galena (sixth) and Damonte Ranch (seventh).

The boys frosh/soph team finished 25th while the varsity girls didn’t score any points and the frosh/soph girls scored one point to finished 29th.

“The weather was a factor in a lot of events. It was extremely wet,” Fallon boys coach Steve Heck said. “However, many kids rose to the occasion and PR’d despite the conditions. We had four individual PRs for the boys. A good portion of them came from the distance crew.”

Thomson took second in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 0.03 seconds, and third in the 1600 run in 4:27.63. Mauga finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 140 feet, 6 inches, and 14th in the shot put in 43-9.5.

“Tristen of course had a strong day,” said Heck of Thomson, who will be running at Mt. Sac this weekend to compete with some of the best 800 runners in the country. “Mauga was the only other varsity point getter for us getting one point in the discus.”

Notable performances in the frosh/soph division included Colton Peterson taking ninth in the 400 (55.24), Reid Clyburn finishing sixth in the 300 hurdles (44.75) followed by Trevor Brown in 12th at 47.02, and Oscar Garcia placing fifth in the high jump at 5-4.

Heck said that varsity runners Joseph Terry shaved 10 seconds off his 1600 to go under five minutes, while Michael Anderson and frosh/soph runners Isaiah Williams and Kapili Gleason broke the 5:30 mark.

Drake Copley broke 25 seconds in the 200 for the first time in his career and Peterson’s run in the 400 was a personal best. Davis Koenig had a strong showing in his first time in the 300 hurdles race and Taylen Cordes had a personal best in the shot put and is now in the top 10 of the regional standings.

“We will be looking forward to more favorable weather next week and hopefully even more stellar performances,” Heck said.

Fallon didn’t get to compete in the 100 varsity boys, both of the 110 hurdles and 200 races, and pole vault.

For the girls, Chloe Overlie took sixth in the 1600 in 5:46.31 in the frosh/soph, Sierra Hickox was seventh in the long jump at 13-11.75, LeAnn Stands was 12th in the discus at 88-07, and Hickox and Emily Evett tied for 15th in the high jump at 3-10. Evett was also 13th in the long jump at 12-11.

Like the boys, Fallon’s girls didn’t compete in several races, including the 200 and 100 hurdles, as well as the long jump (varsity), triple jump (frosh/soph) and pole vault.

Fallon will head over the pass on Friday for the Del Oro Invitational in Loomis, Calif. The Greenwave returns to compete in the Silver State in two weeks for the Carson Invitational.
